When I first got gmail I was a little bit confused by it. But after realizing how it grouped conversations and getting used to labels and searching rather than folders, it is way better than the rest. The spam filter is beyond compare and they're always adding cool little Google Labs features. It can do a lot more than it could when I started including voice, video, and text chat from within Gmail, not requiring a separate program. Also I can send SMS text messages to phones from my chat window with ease. Limitless features and now I can even customize the look of my email page with themes. It's already better than the rest and it just keeps getting better.
